What Size Christmas Wreath Do You Need? A Sizing Guide for Doors, Gables, and Storefronts
A wreath is the finishing touch on a holiday display, but the wrong size can look lost on a big house. The most common mistake we see is a wreath that's too small for the space. Here's how to size it right.
Common Wreath Sizes
Store-bought wreaths are often 24 inches or smaller, which works on a standard front door seen up close. For exterior displays seen from the street, we install lit wreaths in three larger sizes: 36-inch, 48-inch, and 60-inch.
Front Doors
For a standard single front door, a wreath around two-thirds of the door's width usually looks balanced. Measure your door, then leave several inches of door showing on each side. Double doors or a tall entry can handle a larger wreath, or a matching pair.
Gables and Second-Story Peaks
Wreaths on a gable or above a garage are seen from much farther away, so they need to be bigger. A 48-inch or 60-inch lit wreath reads clearly from the street on most two-story homes. On one Bluff Dale farmhouse in our project gallery, a five-foot wreath with a gold-trimmed bow anchors the whole display.
Storefronts and Commercial Entrances
Commercial entrances usually call for 48- or 60-inch wreaths so they match the scale of the building and can be seen from the parking lot. Pair them with garland on columns or awnings for a finished look. Our commercial lighting guide covers planning a business display.
Quick Sizing Tips
Measure the space, not just the door.
Think about viewing distance. The farther away people see it, the bigger it should be.
When in doubt, go bigger. An oversized wreath almost always looks better than an undersized one.
Light it. An unlit wreath disappears at night. Lit wreaths match the rest of your display after dark.
Garland and Bows
Garland finishes an installation the way trim finishes a room. We install lit garland along porch railings, entryways, columns, doorway arches, fences, and awnings, and finish wreaths with bows. Red bows are the classic choice. Gold-trimmed bows look great with warm white lights.
